This Wildlife Conservation Scent Detection K9 certification workshop, held in Calgary, trains handlers in the specialized skills needed to develop conservation detection dogs. The hands-on, two-day intensive is part of a broader certification program that evaluates the handler's ability as a trainer, equipping participants to bring inexperienced dogs along into effective conservation work.
Participants learn to introduce the daisy wheel, teach dogs to ignore distractions, handle searches where no target scent is present (as in many field deployments), and work complex scent puzzles using real-time scent dynamics. Through demonstrations, practice, and post-exercise debriefings, handlers build confidence and skill, with experienced teams progressing toward double-blind field testing. Class sizes are kept small for individualized feedback.
